New Pennsylvania law expands health insurance coverage for young adults
Adult children will benefit from increased health insurance coverage
Young people in Pennsylvania will be able to stay on their parents’ health insurance policy until age 30, Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell announced this week.
The governor signed into law a bill expanding the coverage that young adults may receive. Previously, insurance companies were obligated to offer coverage to dependent children up to age 19, leaving many unemployed young people out in the cold.
“Young adults, aged 19 to 30, represent the highest number of those without health insurance in our state,” said Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Joel Ario. The new law applies to single, uninsured adult children who either reside in Pennsylvania or are full-time students. An estimated 15,000 adult children will be able to benefit from the new policy, the governor’s office said.
And the governor noted the difficulty that many young people are having in finding employment. He cited the stress that Pennsylvania families are undergoing “due to recent college grads having trouble finding a job that offers health benefits.” In America as a whole, the Kaiser Foundation estimates, 30 percent of young people lack health insurance, leaving them more susceptible to illness and expensive medical bills.
