Know where home insurance policies stand when mold is involved

Consumers should be sure they know exactly where their home insurance company stands when it comes to mold issues.

Consumers should be sure they know exactly where their home insurance company stands when it comes to mold issues.

This is especially true in storm-prone regions of the country, such as Florida, where mold is a common fact of life after heavy rains and flooding.

With that in mind, the Atlanta Journal Constitution recently noted that homeowners in Florida typically do not have coverage against mold damage accidentally caused by water, although this was the case before a string of major hurricanes affected the state, not to mention its insurers, earlier this decade.

“Most policies exclude coverage for mold altogether, or they give a token amount, usually $10,000. And it is only covered when the primary cause of the loss from mold is water. Just a mold claim never was covered – and never will be,” Florida insurance professional Rick Combs told the newspaper.

People who do spot mold in their home should clean it promptly with a mix of bleach and water, while discarding items such as clothing and furniture that are also affected. Given how much it can cost to fix a full blown mold infestation, consumers should also know how to what extend they’re covered under home insurance.
