Employers increasingly unsatisfied with health insurers

Large and small employers seek more information and broader coverage from health insurance providers.

A study released today by PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Health Research Institute surveyed nearly 250 employers, ranging from large multi-nationals to privately held small companies, and found that satisfaction is dropping.

Large employers remain more satisfied than small employers, but as large employer satisfaction decreases, concerns become similar. Both kinds of employers want to see higher-quality data and reporting to use in constructing workforce profiles, simplifying plans, and creating targeted programs.

“Employers recognize that it’s better to manage the health of their workforce than to manage the cost of illness, and they want their health plan to help manage the entire health continuum,” says Paul Veronneau, principal and U.S. healthcare payer leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Additionally, small employers have begun to see wellness programs as important, and they are a key issue for large employers.

Wellness and disease management programs are important to employers, but employees appear not to share these concerns. While 71 percent of employers offer wellness programs, only 50 percent of employees participate.
