Insurance group makes fraud reporting easier

The NICB now allows consumers to report fraud via text messaging

The National Insurance Crime Bureau announced this week that it has a new text message-based fraud reporting system, allowing consumers to more easily alert the nonprofit to illegal insurance activity.

The text-based reporting service, called TIP411, joins the NICB’s existing 1-800-TEL-NICB hotline and fraud-report website. With TIP411, consumers can engage in a “live chat” with an NICB representative. People can also report insurance fraud with total anonymity if they so desire.

The nonprofit fraud investigation group notes that reporting is now available to the 246 million cell phone subscribers in the U.S.

Insurance fraud is a serious concern: an estimated 10 percent of claims are fraudulent, leading to wasted man-hours within the insurance industry and higher costs to insurance customers. The NICB has 80 indicators that indicate a claim could be fraudulent, like length of policy coverage or even vehicles’ fuel consumption.

Joe Wehrle, NICB’s president, urges people to “help us in our efforts to keep their insurance costs down by using this technology to report fraudulent activity and vehicle theft.”
