Drunk driving may be more widespread than expected

Given the effect that drunk driving has on public safety as well as auto insurance rates, many people may be alarmed to learn how many people admit to getting behind the wheel after having too many drinks.

Given the effect that drunk driving has on public safety as well as auto insurance rates, many people may be alarmed to learn how many people admit to getting behind the wheel after having too many drinks.

An article from HealthDay News features recent government research which found that 11.9 percent of binge drinkers acknowledged driving within two hours of drinking. This is especially noteworthy in light of the 1.5 billion episodes of binge drinking that are estimated to take place in the United States every year.

One researcher, Dr. Timothy Naimi, noted that while the dangers of drunk driving are already well-known, the numbers of people who do so after binge drinking had not been as widely known. The project involved a survey of about 14,000 drivers in 13 states in 2003, as well as 14 states in 2004.

Naimi also noted that the number of annual binge drinking episodes in the U.S. translates into an average of seven per adult each year.

Overall, the survey found that one in five binge drinkers drive after consuming alcohol at bars or restaurants, while many others drink at friends’ houses or elsewhere.
