A Sacramento, California family of four has been arrested on auto insurance fraud charges after allegedly falsifying reports that their family vehicle had been stolen.

The charges stem from a $50,000 insurance claim filed on October 3, 2006 by Amjad Javaid with The Hartford Insurance Company that claimed his 2003 Range Rover had been stolen. The car was later found burned up, KCRA-TV reported on August 10.
However, after initial statements from all four family members and their whereabouts of where the car was said to be stolen were found to be false, the insurance claim was denied. Subsequent investigations by the Sacramento County Urban Auto Insurance Fraud Task Force took place before charges were filed on August 5.

Fifty-three-year-old Amjad Javaid, his wife 43-year-old Zarina Javaid, their son 24-year-old Fahad Javaid, and his 23-year-old wife Fatima Javaid were all arrested and charged with conspiracy, presenting a false oral or written statement to the insurance company, and knowingly presenting a false claim to the insurance company, while all but Zarina Javaid were also charged with arson.

If convicted, each family member could face up to five years in prison and/or $10,000 in fines.
On July 29, the California Department of Insurance reported that the state had seen a 25 percent increase in suspected vehicle arson fraud cases in 2008 when compared to similar data 2007. They suspected that a link between the rise in cases and the struggling economy was likely.
