Homeowners should take inventory while spring cleaning
This may make it easier to file insurance claims in the event of a loss.Spring cleaning may be an ideal time for homeowners to take inventory of their possessions.
Such behavior can help make it easier to file home insurance claims in the case of a theft or property loss. Kansas City-based KC Inventory suggested that those already in "organizational mode" take time to thoroughly document their possessions - or contact a professional inventory service for assistance.
"When you're cleaning out drawers and going through your personal possessions, your memory is very fresh in terms of remembering what you own and how much it means to you," Rick Bell, founder of KC Home Inventory, said.
The Insurance Information Institute recommends that homeowners approach inventory with a strategy, whether they choose to categorize by location, type, age or value of their possessions. Taking pictures or videotaping can help with this process. Homeowners with expensive artwork or jewelry should meet with their insurer to discuss their coverage, as some of these items require special policies.
Inventories are also a good place for homeowners to record information from legal documents, such as birth certificates and wills. A copy of this inventory should be stored outside of the house, in a safe deposit box or with a friend.
