Health insurance remains top concern amid fumbling economy

Job loss worries may be at the forefront, but health coverage concerns shouldn’t be overlooked

Some say economic indicators have show the recession reaching the bottom with others hoping for a recover by as soon as year-end 2009. But the national unemployment rate has reached 8.9 percent with expectations for more layoffs.

As individuals and families are swept up with the fear of losing a job and income, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners NAIC) is reminding people not to lose focus of priorities – including continue health insurance coverage.

“These uncertain times require us all to be vigilant about our insurance to make sure we are protected,” said NAIC president and New Hampshire insurance commissioner Roger Sevigny.

“Consumers can safeguard themselves and their families regardless of their employment situation by making sure they understand their coverage and researching less expensive alternatives,” he added.

NAIC said one of the most important tips it can offer is to review health insurance options early and act before a deadline passes and coverage is no longer available or is set at higher rates.

For those who are married, don’t forget to consider switching to a spouse’s plan in the case of job loss, says NAIC.
