Employee health benefits valued later in life

Older Americans are working and reaping health insurance benefits longer

Older Americans have a lot on their minds these days – especially since many have seen the value of their retirement savings diminish during the worst economic crisis the nation has faced in many decades.

Many older Americans are opting to stay in the workforce longer than they initially planned in order to replenish those savings funds.

In fact, Deft Research recently released its 2009 Age-In Study which looks at those people who are eligible for Medicare benefits – which means they have turned 65 – and the type of health insurance coverage they prefer.

According to the study, the percentage of Americans over 65 deciding to continue working has grown from 43 percent to 55 percent. Among those remaining in the workforce, most are opting for commercial employee health benefits as their primary source of health insurance.

When looking at all people reaching 65 years of age, Deft finds that just under half 48 percent) are looking to purchase Medicare coverage.
