Driver knowledge on the decline

Americans are staying of the road for financial reasons, but those still driving seem to have subpar skills

Although money woes have forced many to cut back on dining out and buying new clothes, a new report says that driving less is another way many Americans are saving money

Results of a national drivers test and survey from a well-known auto insurance company have revealed some surprising trends about the motorists on the road these days.

According to the survey results, 41 million drivers would not pass a written driving test if it were administered today. The auto insurance firm said that licensed American drivers’ knowledge of road rules and safety have diminished since last year.

While younger generations tend to recoil from the belief that older means wiser, the auto insurance company’s findings suggest those who have been behind the wheel longer do have a better grasp on driving rules.

The survey also showed that 35 percent of drivers would be interested in a so-called “pay as you go” auto insurance program if their provider offered it.
