Refresh Your Home: Small Projects for Big Change

Even the nicest home may become dated and boring over time, making us yearn for a new and refreshing look. Unfortunately, remodeling is usually expensive, time-consuming, and a drain on your energy. But making a change doesn't have to cost a fortune - take a look at these quick and easy ways to jazz up any room in your house!

1. The kitchen. The easiest way to spruce up a kitchen is to freshen the walls with new paint. Don't just change color, change style: use sponge painting, or try for a fresco effect by blending warm, muted colors. Another choice is to paint vertical stripes to give a wallpaper effect. Even just adding a simple border of paint or wallpaper could change the whole feel of the room. Other ideas: add crown molding or a chair rail, change the drawer and cabinet pulls, or put up pine shelves to show off your collectibles. Finally, you can change the face of your refrigerator or dishwasher to a new, bright color - just contact your manufacturer.

2. The bedroom. New colors on your bedroom walls can strikingly alter the look and feel of the entire area. Use red and gold tones if you're going for a warm appearance, or choose blues, lavenders and greens for a cool and soothing effect. Other ideas: make the room even warmer by purchasing new sheets or a duvet cover, add a plush area rug if you have hardwood floors, add a wall or cheval mirror to make the room look larger, or simply add colorful throw pillows to your bed.

3. The bathroom. For the bathroom, try new colors like sage green or pale yellow to contrast with older tiles and brighten the look. Another simple idea is to get new towels. You don't have to buy an entire set; you can just get some new and contrasting hand or face towels. Try folding a few hand towels and putting them in a basket on the counter as an accent. Other ideas: buy a new shower curtain and unusual shower hooks, put inexpensive toiletries in a bowl on the sink, make a candle grouping on a shelf, get a new soap dispenser and matching wastebasket, or add a small glass vase filled with fresh flowers.

4. The family/living room. Changing the wall color to a dark red, purple or brown will make a large room seem more intimate. Look for other ways to shrink a "great" room down to a friendly room. Many of today's homes feature a large space that often combines casual living and dining areas. Furniture groupings can achieve a cozy effect by forming an eating area, a discussion section or an entertainment zone. Avoid decorating large rooms with mirrors because they increase the spaciousness of the area. If your ceiling is high, add potted trees to match the scale of the room. Furnish large rooms with large pieces, including tall bookcases made of dark wood and avoid glass tabletops which give the illusion of more space.

Changing your living areas with new colors, textures, and accents is a great way to freshen things up without spending a fortune. If you are looking into doing major renovations, however, make sure to update your homeowner's insurance! Let NetQuote connect you with qualified agents who can get you the policy you need at the price you want.
