DUI and Car Insurance Rates

A: A DUI can really go a lot of different ways. In a worst-case scenario, your insurance policy may be cancelled or put in a "non-renew" category. This might happen because with a DUI, you are in a much higher risk category. If you were in a preferred driver category before the incident, you might be dropped to a standard or sub-standard category.

Higher Rates
In most cases, your insurance rates will increase significantly because, remember, you are now in a high risk category. Each state handles this a little differently, so it's best to check with a local agent who knows the laws in your area. In some states, a DUI conviction can stay on your driving record for as long as seven years so expect your rates to be high for quite a while.

What is an SR-22?
You will also have to acquire an SR-22 form, which is issued by your insurance company and kept on file with your local DMV. This form states that you have obtained the required minimum liability coverage for your state. This form also requires the insurance company to notify the DMV if your insurance lapses or is cancelled for any reason.
 
More Choices = Lower Rates
Many insurance companies don't offer SR-22 insurance, in which case you would need to find an insurance company that deals with higher risk drivers. Long story short - your car insurance will definitely change and your rates will definitely increase because of the higher risk you pose. But, search around. Some insurance companies specialize in high risk drivers and the more quotes you have to choose from, the better chance you have in finding the lowest possible rate.
