Keeping the Doctor Away: What an Apple a Day Can Do For You

We've all heard the old adage, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." But, is it true? Maybe so! Apples offer a wealth of health benefits while also tasting great. Read how fall's favorite fruit keeps you healthy – and, get the perfect apple crisp recipe you've been looking for.

There are many benefits of including apples in your diet. This fruit fights disease in a multitude of ways including the potential for a decreased risk of cancer and heart disease. A number of components in apples have been found to lower blood cholesterol and improve bowel function. Also, they may be associated with a reduced risk of ischemic heart disease, stroke, prostate cancer, type II diabetes and asthma. Here are a few specifics

  1. Cancer Prevention. Recent studies have shown that apple consumption is linked with reduced cancer risk. A Mayo Clinic study indicated that flavonoids (commonly referred to as bioflavonoids) abundant in apples are rich in antioxidants, and help prevent the growth of prostate cancer cells. A Cornell University study found that phytochemicals (natural disease fighters found in plants) in the skin of the apple inhibit the reproduction of colon cancer cells by 43 percent. Finally, the National Cancer Institute has reported that the flavonoids found in apples may reduce the risk of lung cancer by as much as 50 percent.

  2. Healthy Lungs. Two recent British studies indicate that people who eat at least five apples per week experience better lung function and have a lower risk for respiratory disease. In another study, apples were singled out as a fruit that could cut smokers’ risk of COPD (also known as emphysema) in half.

  3. Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention: A Finnish study showed that people who eat a diet rich in flavonoids have a lower incidence of heart disease. Other studies indicate that flavonoids may help prevent strokes.

  4. Weight Loss. Apples are an excellent source of dietary fiber, and dietary fiber helps aid digestion and promotes weight loss. A medium apple contains about five grams of fiber, more than most cereals. Also, apples contain almost zero fat and cholesterol, so they are the perfect snack and dessert food.

  5. Brain Health. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts have discovered that consuming apple juice may protect against the cell damage that contributes to age related memory loss, like Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

With an abundance of apple choices at your tips this fall, use your excess to create a cold–weather favorite – Apple Crisp:

  1. Slice 4 tart apples (Granny Smith or Gala)
  2. Prepare topping using ¼ cup of flour, ¼ cup of quick–cooking oatmeal (for that nutty taste,) ½ cup of brown sugar, ¼ cup of butter and a teaspoon of cinnamon.
  3. Mix topping until crumbly
  4. Put apples into pan and sprinkle on topping
  5. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes, or until apples are tender
  6. Pour yourself a big glass of milk and enjoy!
