Driving a Friends CarAsk the Expert
Q. Will my auto insurance cover me if something were to happen while driving someone else's car?
A: There are three things to consider when asking this question: the car owner's policy, the state you live in, and whether you have permission to drive the car or not. Generally, auto insurance covers the owner and the owner's car. Many policies will cover any driver of the insured vehicle, as long as the driver had permission to drive the car. In the case that the car was borrowed without the owner's permission or stolen, the car owner's insurance would not be affected by the driver's actions. So, if you crash a friend's car that you were driving without their permission, your insurance will be affected rather than the car owner's. Not all policies, however, will cover anyone who drives a car. Some policies are written to only cover certain people named on the policy. And the state you live in can play a role in all this as well as different areas have different rules. To play it safe, give your insurance agent a call before you drive a friend's car or let them drive yours. It's a simple conversation that can clear up a lot of questions before an accident occurs.
