Questions to ask an insurance agent when shopping for a new policy

Ask the Expert

Q: What questions should I ask an insurance agent when shopping for a new policy?
A: Great question! Finding a competitive quote is only half the equation when making insurance decisions. Finding an agent who is patient, knowledgeable and responsive not only helps you during your buying process, but also indicates the kind of service you would receive when you really need it.

Your questions should focus on the agent’s knowledge base and competency, but you also want to get a feel for the agent’s emotional interest in you and your family as well. If you ever get a sense that the agent doesn’t have time for you, or doesn’t feel comfortable answering your questions, you may be talking to the wrong person.

First, you should ask them about their job. How long have they been with this particular company? How long have they been in the insurance industry? If they’re an independent agent, how long have they been in business? If you want to be more specific, ask about their education.

Second, ask about how the agent is compensated. Are they salaried, commission–based or both? This is something useful to keep in mind when the agent is discussing different insurance policies at different price points.

Third, if the agent is an independent, ask about what companies and carriers they do the most business with. This way, you can understand where possible policy options might come from. Do they broker policies from several larger companies or do they work exclusively with one company? Often, if an agent is exclusive with one carrier, she’ll have less flexibility in the number of quotes she can provide.

Finally, ask for client referrals. You want to make sure you’re working with someone reputable.

The agent should take the time to answer your questions. If they’re hesitant or closed–off with their answers or don’t like the fact that you need time to make a decision, you may be better off looking for another agent. In that case, ask family members, friends, and co–workers for their recommendations. Or, with the sophistication of online services like NetQuote, you can submit an application online and get matched with a list of local agents from which you can interview and choose. Remember, this agent is someone you’re going to build a trusting relationship with; you should make the most informed decision possible and be completely comfortable with your choice.

Looking for a new agent? Let NetQuote connect you with quality, local agents who will compete for your business. You’ll get the variety of options you need when selecting a new agent.
