Threats about the H1N1 flu are the latest red flags to cause some vacationers to cancel trips. But bad weather, natural disasters or even job loss are cited as reasons why people cancel their getaways.
The Insurance Information Institute advises consumers to consider seeking insurance quotes on travel protection when buying a trip package - it could save significant money in the long run.
Jeanne M. Salvatore, senior vice president and consumer spokesperson for the organization said that it's not just sickness and weather consumers should consider when investigating travel insurance, the economy plays a role as well.
"[Travel insurance] also provides important financial protection if the tour operator goes bankrupt or if a traveler gets injured while on vacation," according to Salvatore.
Travel insurance rates, says the Insurance Information Institute, are typically based on the cost of the trip and the age of the traveler with add-ons like travel delay and trip interruption coverage available, too.
