Research conducted in Pennsylvania determined that many consumers do not fully understand what insurance fraud is and the ramifications it can have for insurance companies or their own criminal record.
According to the Pennsylvania Insurance Fraud Prevention Authority (IFPA), its new awareness and prevention campaign is targeting state residents that hold insurance policies about the seriousness of insurance fraud.
"We want more consumers to understand that lying to their insurance company is a felony for which they can be investigated, charged, and punished," said IFPA executive director Ralph Burnham.
"Our previous efforts have focused on the costs of insurance fraud to everyone and, most recently, on the impact that insurance fraud can have on people's reputations and relationships," said Burnham.
The campaign features mock examples of consumers contemplating auto or homeowners insurance fraud. In both cases, actors portray consumers that have had a home burglarized or been in a car accident and are considering lying to their insurance companies about damage in order to collect more money.
