Water damage a big factor in home insurance claims
When it comes to water damage and home insurance, people have far more to worry about than just hurricanes and flooding brought on by severe weather events.

For example, a prominent insurance in Washington State is offering consumers some tips on basic maintenance that can prevent potentially serious and expensive water damage. The most frequent claims are said to involve things like plumbing leaks from dishwasher and washing machine hoses and even ice makers.
With that in mind, the company advises people to regularly check their washing machine hoses for kinks or cracks, and to replace the hoses every five years. Homeowners are also advised to have water heaters inspected if they are more than five years old, and to replace them after five years. Inspecting the flooring around water heaters is also recommended.
Other tips include placing a plastic container under the kitchen sink to catch potential leaks early, and to remove hoses from outside faucets as winter weather begins to set in.
While floods and hurricanes will continue to receive the most attention, these tips are especially important because some home insurance policies do not cover water damage that is deemed to be caused by a failure to perform basic maintenance.
