Commuters looking to go green, or those looking to simply stay in shape, who ride their bicycles regularly, should make sure they are properly covered in their insurance plans in case of theft or an accident that may not even be at the fault of the cyclist.

Dr. Chris Cavacuiti, a staff physician at St. Michael’s Hospital at the University of Toronto as well as a cyclist who was hit by a truck in 2006 at the fault of the motorist, researched bicycle safety in his city following the accident. Among the results was his finding that, contrary to some public opinions, that cyclists were only the cause of less than ten percent of the accidents with cars, according to the university's website.
In addition to having bikers invest in lights and reflective clothing to make themselves more visible, Cavacuiti added that Toronto could further improve cyclist safety by creating narrower and less crowded roads that suit cycling better, a suggestion that would also improve U.S. cyclists' safety as well.
Taking proper precautions with storing ones' bike is also an important aspect when considering what to include on a home insurance plan for themselves.
According to a home insurance provider in the UK, where bicycles are used at a higher level that the U.S. is only beginning to approach, a crime survey showed a 22 percent spike in the number of stolen bikes in 2008-2009 when compared to the previous year.
