While public pool warnings say no diving in the shallow areas, insurance industry experts advise consumers not to jump into the backyard pool before consulting insurance companies about specific coverage needs.
With more families staying home this summer and taking advantage of the inexpensive backyard landscape instead of pricey vacations, be sure homeowner policies and liability coverage is up to date.
The Insurance Information Institute recently released a statement reminding pool owners or would-be owners about the insurance and safety implications of in-ground and even inflatable above-ground pools.
"All pools - from a simple kiddy pool to an aquatic extravaganza - can be dangerous and need to be properly insured and comply with local safety standards," said Jeanne M. Salvatore, senior vice president and consumer spokesperson for organization.
Salvatore and the Insurance Information Institute suggest homeowners touch base with their insurance company first to inform them a pool is on premise and then to discuss the value added of supplemental liability insurance.
