Home insurance cost is one of many reasons for fire safety

With that in mind, the National Fire Protection Association has some tips that can save lives and avert unwanted calls to one's insurance company.

Many carriers offer discounts for people who install fire alarms. However, these devices also save untold numbers of lives each year, considering the organization's estimate that 40 percent of home fire deaths occur in structures that do not have working alarms.

Also, 96 percent of homes report having fire alarms, but 41 percent of reported house fires involved structures where they were not present or were not actually working.

Beyond alarms, people are also advised to plan out an escape route and to actually practice that escape. According to the NFPA, 66 percent of those surveyed say they have developed an escape plan, but only 35 percent said they have actually practiced it.

Given the danger and financial catastrophe that a fire can cause, it only makes sense to follow basic safety procedures, especially if it's possible to save some money on home insurance in the process.
