Homeowners insurance policies important after severe weather
Thousands of Colorado residents are brushing up on their homeowners insurance in light of storms that swept through the state earlier this week.
Thousands of Colorado residents are brushing up on their homeowners insurance in light of storms that swept through the state earlier this week.
A report on the state's KUSA-TV says that homes in a number of towns suffered damage from high winds and heavy rains, along with golf ball-sized hail. Damage was said to include roofs ruined by falling trees, fallen fences and more.
The report noted that homeowners insurance policies will cover damage from wind and hail, and offered some additional tips for consumers.
For example, homeowners should take photos of any damage and be prepared to write a quick inventory, including purchase prices and estimated replacement costs, of all lost or destroyed property.
Other tips include making temporary repairs, such as covering broken windows, to avoid additional damages, and getting estimates for home repairs to provide as soon as possible to the insurance adjuster. The article also warns consumers to be wary of scammers who prey on people after severe weather events and disasters.
Stories like these, combined with the current economy can also serve as a reminder to homeowners not to try to cut corners by scaling back their coverage.
