Severe winter weather can put home insurance policies to the test when considering the damage that storms can cause, as well as other things like roof-damaging ice dams.
With that in mind, a recent Bloomberg News report quotes Mike Rogers of Commodity Weather Group as saying that a weak El Nino is in effect over the Pacific Ocean, which can result in more severe winter conditions in the Northeast as much as 75 percent of the time.
According to Rogers, the upcoming winter could be one of the worst in a decade, with El Ninos reportedly occurring every two to five years for as long as 12 months at a time.
One benefit that El Nino conditions can have for homeowners is that they tend to result in less hurricane activity in the U.S. However, some parts of the country can also tend to see more flood-producing storms while others can produce drought that allows more wildfires to break out.
Overall, investing in a good home insurance policy is more important than ever when considering how severe weather events have largely been on the increase in most parts of the United States in recent years.
