Fire spurs many to consult homeowner insurance policies

A wildfire in Santa Barbary County that has already threatened 3,500 residences and 100 commercial properties leaves many families wondering about the coverage included in their current homeowner insurance policy.

According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the blaze has been 10 percent contained but has already destroyed 75 residences. Over 2,000 fire emergency personnel have been involved in the ongoing fire fight.

“It’s just a continued battle against the weather,” Santa Barbary County Emergency Operations Center spokeswoman Jodi Dyck was quoted as saying in a Bloomberg article. “The winds continue, and it is burning in steep areas with a lot dense vegetation and a lot of fuel.”

The Insurance Information Network of California has reminded area residents to review their homeowner insurance policy and understand what displacement costs may or may not be covered.

The group is advising those affected by the wildfire to immediately get in touch with their insurance carrier for details.
