Housing insurance may be needed after all as 2009 hurricane season finally gets underway

Despite recent reductions by storm experts regarding what to expect this hurricane season, the rate of hurricanes is finally picking up with three storms forming on August 16 that may lead to families reevaluating housing insurance plans.

Despite recent reductions by storm experts regarding what to expect this hurricane season, the rate of hurricanes is finally picking up with three storms forming on August 16 that may lead to families reevaluating housing insurance plans.

According to the National Weather Service's National Hurricane Center (NHC), the first storm to form, Tropical Depression Ana, had weakened as it headed west-northwest towards the north coast of the Dominican Republic and will likely be nothing more than a topical wave.

However the other two storms, Hurricane Bill and Tropical Depression Claudette, have either already or are on track to hit the U.S. in the coming days. Claudette weakened somewhat since heading northwest through the Florida Panhandle and into Alabama, but nonetheless had dropped more than four inches of rain in some parts of Florida while sustaining winds of 30 mph or more.

Bill currently stands to potentially pack the biggest punch, as the NHC reported it had gained strength in the Pacific with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph. An advisory published Monday morning warned that Bill had the potential to become a "major hurricane" by Wednesday and could hit the U.S. east cost by Friday.

While so far unaffected this season, Texas insurance companies have prepared accordingly in the wake of the damage caused by Hurricane Ike in 2008. One leading insurance company has already announced it was raising its rates for houses along the Gulf Coast, while another has announced that rates would go up in the area surrounding Houston, TX.
