Affordable Family Health Insurance Options

In life there are certain risks you’re willing to take, but the health of your family and your financial stability aren’t anything to gamble with. Since an accident or a serious illness can occur without warning, it’s necessary that you take precautions to ensure medical treatment is available without bankrupting your family.

Although family medical insurance coverage is not always available through your employer, and the cost of healthcare services continuously increases, there are options for affordable family health insurance for you and your family.

The Need for Family Medical Insurance

Many people make the mistake of assuming that they do not need medical insurance coverage, as they have not run into any serious medical expenses over the past few years. But if you or someone in your family suddenly needs health care and you don’t have health insurance, you could end up paying thousands of dollars from your own pocket.

The objective of family medical insurance is to offer you financial stability during a crisis. If you are covered by a medical insurance policy, most of your medical bills are paid by a third-party payer, which is the insurance company itself or your employer, who provides the health insurance coverage for you.

Employer Provided Family Medical Insurance

There are two main ways to get medical insurance coverage. The most common way is to purchase family medical insurance through a group health plan. Another is to buy individual health insurance directly from an insurance company.

The majority of the population obtains their health insurance from their employer, which covers individuals, and if needed, their spouse and children. This is typically part of a group health plan the employer has obtained with their chosen health insurance company, and is the least expensive among all other affordable family health insurance plans.

The total or the majority of the health insurance premium is paid by the employer. Group health quotes work as a part of a managed healthcare sector that facilitates an organized purchase of and paying for the medical services. It offers insurance plans in a variety of packages, including health maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred provider organizations or plans (PPOs) and indemnity plans (fee-for-service).

In a group health scenario, some employers provide only one medical coverage plan, while others offer their employees the choice of HMO, PPO or indemnity plan.

Getting Insurance on Your Own

If you are not included in any group insurance plan through your employer, of if you are self-employed, your best bet is to shop around for individual health insurance quotes to see what companies offer low cost medical insurance that also fits your needs.

In this situation, you’ll pay premiums at regular intervals for a fixed time, and if you or someone in your family needs medial attention during that time, most of your medical expenses will be taken care of by your insurance company. However, the benefits offered in individual health insurance plans are not as broad based as those provided under group health insurance plans, so it’s important for you to be aware of what is or is not covered under your plan.

If you have been laid off from your employer, you typically have the option of retaining the policy you had while you were employed, but of course, you have to take over payments for its premium. This would fall under the law of COBRA, which makes it possible for an employee to continue with the policy for the next 18 months in the event one leaves his job or is laid off. Under the same law, if your spouse was covered under your health insurance but you are being divorced, they have the COBRA option to continue their group medical insurance protection, as would your widowed spouse and orphaned minor children in the event of your death.

Remember, medical insurance coverage is the best guarantee for proper medical attention when you need it in a way that doesn’t break you financially. Every responsible individual, especially those with families, should have some form of either individual or group health insurance.
