Younger workers have been having a tough time finding health insurance in the current economy, but that doesn't necessarily mean they lack options.
A recent Associated Press report focuses on some of the steps that healthy young people can take to ensure that their coverage needs are met, whether they are employed or not.
For example, the wire service quotes Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger as saying that many young adults can check with insurers for plans that offer lower premiums by carrying high deductibles. Another option she mentions is monthly gap policies.
The AP also reminds younger consumers to take the time to compare policies, with an insurance agent if necessary, and to check on government subsidies for COBRA premiums if they have been recently laid off.
Younger workers may find more motivation than ever to seek health insurance policies in the coming months. Congress is currently debating sweeping reforms that could include financial penalties for those who do not have coverage.
