Health insurance protects in case of sudden hospitalization

A recent warning about food safety should serve as a reminder that health insurance can help guard against sudden illnesses that can occasionally require hospitalization.

A recent warning about food safety should serve as a reminder that health insurance can help guard against sudden illnesses that can occasionally require hospitalization.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest recently released a list of the top ten unsafe foods that are currently regulated by the FDA, based on factors like the number of outbreaks of sickness recorded over the past year.

For example, leafy greens were said to have sickened more than 13,000 people in 363 different outbreaks, followed by eggs, tuna and oysters. Various contaminants and microbes were said to be responsible for such problems, with other popular items such as cheese, ice cream and tomatoes also making the list.

The list, along with some high profile outbreaks of food related sickness in recent years, may help diminish the public perception that tainted meat is largely responsible for such problems.

The stakes can be high when it comes to food borne illnesses. For example, the Centers for Disease Control notes that about 76 million people are struck with a food related illness in any given year, many of which go undiagnosed by doctors. Of that total, 5,000 on average will die and 325,000 will be hospitalized.

Such statistics only help underscore the importance of carrying the best possible health insurance policy.
