Arizona to cut 10,000 parents from state health care coverage

Arizona families are facing potentially significant cuts to their health insurance plans, as the KidsCare program from the state health care system has announced that it will be cutting 10,000 parents of covered children from their coverage plan beginning on October 1.

Arizona families are facing potentially significant cuts to their health insurance plans, as the KidsCare program from the state health care system has announced that it will be cutting 10,000 parents of covered children from their coverage plan beginning on October 1.

"As part of balancing the budget, the Legislature did not fund that project going forward for fiscal year 2010," Monica Coury, the assistant director of the office of intergovernmental relations for the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, told the Yuma Sun. "Elimination of the parents' program is an indication of how Arizona's economy is struggling."

According to the Arizona Republic, families with parents that would be affected by the cuts began receiving letters informing them that their coverage would be cut.

Children from the families would not have their coverage affected by the cuts. However, the changes have sent parents scrambling for new coverage

"The impact is devastation," said Dana Naimark, the president of the Phoenix-based Children's Action Alliance that advocates for social services, told the Republic. "Parents are making desperate phone calls to anywhere they can think of, and the problem is there are almost no alternatives for them."

Arizona's KidsCare program is part of the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) that covers children from families who make less than two times the federal poverty level. Parents had been covered on the plan since 2003. The AHCCCS covers more than one million citizens throughout the state.
