A recent report provides some insight on why it's an increasingly worse idea for consumers to try to save money by avoiding auto insurance coverage.
According to KTAK radio in Wyoming, that state is now one of two nationwide to adopt a real-time auto insurance verification system. Under the system that was implemented earlier in the summer, law enforcement officers will be able to immediately check during traffic stops whether any vehicle registered in the state is insured.
The radio station notes that under current Wyoming law, drivers who fail to carry auto insurance policies could face up to six months in jail and fines as high as $750. The report notes that about 13 percent of vehicles in Wyoming are currently uninsured.
"It makes it a little bit safer for officers on a traffic stop to get that information as soon as possible, so we require the information be back from the insurance company database in five seconds," Marianne Zivkovich of the Wyoming Department of Transportation told the radio station.
Many states nationwide have seen an increase in drivers who try to save money by not having auto insurance. However, along with potentially running afoul of the law, these drivers also risk heavy financial damage if they end up in an accident with an uninsured vehicle that also happens to require medical aid.
