Winter driving can mean more accidents, higher auto insurance
Winter brings slippery roads and low visibility - factors that can lead to accidents and result in consumers paying more on their auto insurance premiums.
In an effort to reduce winter accident rates, New Jersey announced a plan to mandate the removal of snow and ice from passenger vehicles. Governor Jon Corzine said that noncompliant drivers would be hit with a fine of at least $25 and not more than $75.
New Jersey is the first state with such a law on its books. The law won't take effect until 2010, though.
In many parts of the country, cold weather has arrived and drivers are preparing their cars for winter. Some are fitting snow tires; others are getting their cars' vital systems checked.
Both measures are important, says tire distributor The Tire Rack. But drivers are also advised to prepare themselves for winter driving. The Tire Rack recommends learning how to control a car in less-than-ideal road conditions by practicing in an empty, snowy parking lot.
For drivers in cold climates, preparing for winter is essential. Experts say that pre-season preparation will result in safer driving and fewer auto insurance claims.
