People who want to keep their auto insurance rates low have more than just other drivers to worry about. They also need to stay focused on bicycles and pedestrians.
A look at recent statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides further insight into the scope of the problem. In 2007, 698 bicyclists and 4,654 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes.
Both numbers were somewhat lower than the figures recorded in 2006 and 2005. The number of pedestrians killed was the lowest on record since at least 1997, while the number of bicyclists who died in crashes was higher than figures recorded in 2003 and 2002.
The government statistics noted that the average age of those killed on bicycles in crashes was 31, indicating that victims are not just children and that drivers should be on guard for them at all times of the day.
Bicycle fatalities were also said to be most frequent in urban areas in non-intersection areas between the hours of 5 and 9 p.m. summertime was also said to be the most common for bicycle and pedestrian fatalities.
