49 of 50 states now require auto insurance policies
The vast majority of American drivers are now required to carry auto insurance policies, with Wisconsin having become the 49th state to approve such a requirement.
The vast majority of American drivers are now required to carry auto insurance policies, with Wisconsin having become the 49th state to approve such a requirement.
A report in the state's Janesville Gazette newspaper says that the law goes into effect in July 2010 and and will also increase the amount of liability, injury and property damage coverage that a motorist must carry.
The newspaper notes that in 2006, uninsured Wisconsin drivers were involved in about 8,000 accidents that caused 78 deaths and about $35 million in unpaid medical expenses.
While almost every state now requires drivers to carry auto insurance, the recession has seen a growing number of people cutting back on coverage to try to save money. However, this can be an expensive mistake if drivers are fined or end up involved in potentially costly accidents.
One trend that has been helping drivers keep their premiums down has been a decline in the annual number of road fatalities, in part because of improved roads and traffic enforcement.
