According to the study, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Fort Collins, Colorado and Chattanooga, Tennessee had the lowest rate of automobile collisions in the country. Other safe driving cities include Knoxville, Tennessee, Eugene Oregon, and Boise, Idaho.

Alexandria, Virginia was said to have improved its accident rate the most over the past year, with drivers now averaging one every 7.2 years. This was an improvement of 1.8 years over the previous report.

Washington D.C. and Baltimore were reported to be among the most dangerous cities to drive in.

There are various ways consumers can avoid automobile accidents. For example, distracted driving, which includes talking on cell phones and texting, should be avoided at all times. Taking extra care during difficult road conditions and avoiding road rage altercations and potentially unsafe situations like tailgating are also warned against.

By avoiding accidents and driving safely in general, consumers can often save money in the long term on their auto insurance rates.
