New ways to save emerge as recession lingers
Consumers driving less may be eligible for certain car insurance discounts
AAA says that fewer motorists will be on the road this upcoming holiday weekend. According to the travel source, rising fuel prices is one reason that roughly 2 percent fewer vacationers will leave home this weekend compared to last year.
With kids out of school, the 4th of July typically presents parents with an opportune time to take a long weekend with the family out of town.
But as more people opt to stay close to home instead of spending money on travel, they may inadvertently be saving more than they realize.
One national insurer is saying that consumers, on average, could realize savings between 19 and 25 percent on their car insurance if they have low mileage.
The company says that people who drive less than 15,000 miles annually could be eligible for a low-mileage discount on their car insurance. This insurer happens to offer the program in 34 states, but other national providers could be doling out similar savings.
