According to the Department of Transportation website, drivers should be especially mindful in neighborhoods where there are no sidewalks for pedestrians to use, and to drive slowly when passing bus stops. One danger to watch for is children who may be running to a bus stop because they are late.
Generally, a bus flashing yellow lights indicates that it is about to stop, while red flashing lights indicate that children are getting on or off the bus.
The DOT notes that parents should also be sure to instruct their children on staying safe when getting on and off the bus and walking to a bus stop.
Stopping for buses is also the law, and police take notice. For example, a report by WECT-TV in Wilmington, North Carolina noted that local police were following school buses one day to ticket drivers who failed to stop, which is a misdemeanor and which becomes a felony if a person is struck or killed by a driver.
