Simple steps to lowering auto insurance costs

Financial website offers tips to lower auto insurance premiums

Personal finance website Mint.com recently released a list of ten ways to lower auto insurance premiums, and the site reports that drivers’ records are still important.

If a driver had any at-fault accidents or serious moving violations in recent years, her premium could take a hit, Mint says. Some insurers look back three years; others go back five years.

What’s done is done, and a driver may not be able to do anything about his poor driving record – but that doesn’t mean he can’t start driving safely in the present. And driving less will both reduce the odds of getting in an accident and cut a driver’s auto insurance premiums. Some states are allowing pay-as-you-drive insurance, where insurance companies track drivers’ mileage and bill them accordingly.

Mint also suggests that reducing insurance coverage or increasing deductible amounts can help drivers save money on auto insurance. But, the website cautions, these actions are only a good idea if a driver’s car is old and isn’t worth much.

And if a driver is in the market for a new car, she should choose one that has good safety scores and low rates of theft. Auto insurance companies have reams of data available about the cost of insuring cars, so shoppers are advised to purchase wisely.
