Insurance Information Institute is reminding American consumers that intend to hit the road this summer in a rental car - don't forget about car insurance before leaving the garage.
To make sure consumers fully understand car insurance coverage on a rental vehicle, the group has created a podcast that can be downloaded from iTunes to a PDA or laptop - meaning the insurance information can make the trip with the consumers.
Senior vice president and consumer spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute Jeanne M. Salvatore said that without guidance, many consumers waste money or are improperly covered.
"Whether or not to buy rental car insurance or any other insurance product should not be a snap decision," said Salvatore. "Faced with a number of choices, some renters either purchase all of the coverage or they decline the insurance without knowing if they are covered by other policies."
The organization does advise renters to talk with their insurance agent and the credit card company you will be using to pay for the car rental before getting behind the wheel to understand their current coverage.
