Hybrids may cost drivers more in auto insurance, maintenance
A recent study finds that drivers of hybrids may be more likely to end up raising their auto insurance costs by getting more traffic tickets and they may also be putting more expensive wear and tear on their vehicles.
A recent study finds that drivers of hybrids may be more likely to end up raising their auto insurance costs by getting more traffic tickets and they may also be putting more expensive wear and tear on their vehicles.
The study by Quality Planning said that Prius drivers tend to get about 65 percent more traffic citations than the average driver, although that notes that these drivers tend to live in urban areas - which also tend to lead the rest of the nation in tickets.
The report also found that hybrid owners drive about 25 percent more than other vehicle owners, or as much as 10,500 miles per year more.
The vehicles were found to be more expensive to repair as well. Collision coverage loss dollars were 13 percent higher for hybrids, while comprehensive coverage losses were said to be 17 percent higher.
"High-mileage drivers appear to be attracted to these vehicles, so insurers should take steps to verify the intended use of hybrids and validate actual miles driven wherever possible," said Dr. Raj Bhat of Quality Planning.
