Avoid accidents and auto insurance hikes: Drive safely around trucks

A number of states are targeting a specific kind of aggressive driving that can drive up auto insurance rates while also causing unsafe conditions on the road.

A number of states are targeting a specific kind of aggressive driving that can drive up auto insurance rates while also causing unsafe conditions on the road.

The drivers in question are those who recklessly pass trucks or engage in other unsafe conduct, such as tailgating.

For example, a report in Kentucky’s Sentinel-Echo newspaper notes that in three years, there have been 300 fatal accidents on the state’s highways involving commercial vehicles.

Elsewhere, a report on KLAS-TV in Las Vegas cites that Nevada’s problem with people who drive aggressively around big rigs. According to the television station, research has found that the truck drivers are not responsible in 60 percent of these accidents, and that trucks were involved in about 600 accidents statewide in a recent one-year period.

A report in Alabama’s Birmingham News notes that this is also a problem in that state. Alabama and Nevada are among the states currently involved in a federally funded program where state troopers ride in the cab with truckers and report aggressive drivers to unmarked police vehicles that then pull the drivers over.

By taking such steps, authorities are hoping to improve road safety and create conditions that could result in lower auto insurance rates.
