Wisconsin auto insurance rates increase following new law

Wisconsin insurance prices increase following changes in laws.

Wisconsin recently became the 49th state requiring drivers to have auto insurance, raising the level of minimum coverage that drivers must have, too.

As a result, insurance prices are going up - and people aren't happy.

Minimum coverage is increasing from $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident to $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident. Underinsured coverage - which makes up the difference between the amount that an at-fault driver's insurance covers and the cost of a repair - is required in Wisconsin for the first time.

And on June 1 of next year, all drivers will have to carry auto insurance.

The law was pushed through the Legislature and signed by the governor in response to attorneys' claims that liability coverage had not kept pace with inflation. People who suffered injuries or property damage had to go to court to get the proper amount of restitution.

But the new rules are politically unpopular. Republicans in the state assailed the Democratic Legislature for passing the law, and insurance industry groups were quick to blame legislators for the uptick in insurance costs.
